Whakapapa is a great ski field for beginners. With 30% of the slopes for beginners, 45% for intermediate and 25% for advanced skiers, Whakapapa scores with the majority of visitors.

Mountain biking, hiking and tramping are major activities in the area with many amazing bush and alpine tracks, of all levels, open throughout the Park. We also recommend riding the Skywaka Gondola at Whakapapa for a truely unique mountain experience suitable for all age groups.

On some occasions you will need to fit chains as you approach Whakapapa Village, particularly if you have a 2WD vehicle. Chains can be purchased or hired in Ohakune and National Park Village.

Time: 7 hr return. Distance: 10 km. The crater climb is only suitable for fit, experienced, and well equipped people who can make effective judgments about alpine and volcanic hazards.

Mt Ruapehu is full of popular hiking trails, from easy to difficult, with the most challenging in the area being the Crater Climb. This one is for experienced mountaineers only. The water in the lake may seem warm and inviting, but it's really acidic, and definitely not safe for swimming.

Each Sky Waka gondola cabin seats 10 people, and the 1.8km journey takes about 12 minutes, offering panoramic views out across the Central Plateau on the journey.

What time to visit Whakapapa?

To avoid missing out on a carpark, we recommend aiming to arrive at the top of Whakapapa or Turoa by 9am - 10am (the earlier the better)

The fact is that snow tires and chains are intended to give you more traction on slippery roads. So without them, if the road conditions are bad enough, you might be more likely to get into an accident, which could do even more damage to your car.

Between June and October the mount becomes a winter wonderland and is the best time to visit if you're looking to enjoy the snow. Mt Ruapehu offers some of the best slopes for skiing and boarding and has the highest lift accessible peaks in New Zealand.

However, temperatures average 13°C with a maximum temperature of 25°C and a mid-winter minimum of -10°C.

Start with yourself – write down what you already know. Record your parents and their parents keep going back as far as you can. Record your siblings and their children and so on. List dates of births, marriages, deaths, baptisms and places.

Good question! Short answer, yes, but there is actually only one place where it is safe and legal to get down to the lake shore and swim at Crater Lake National Park. It is the Cleetwood Cove Trail, which usually opens mid to late June.

What is not allowed at Crater Lake?

How long is the shuttle ride in Zion? – From the Visitor Center (1st Stop) to the Temple of Sinawava (9th Stop); the shuttle runs approximately 7.7 miles one way and takes about 45 minutes one way.

Snow socks will only improve traction slightly on ice, much less so than snow chains. Against snow chains, snow socks generally provide less grip on snow and ice. Snow socks tend only to be for use on smaller vehicles like cars, SUVs, and pickup trucks.

While ideally you should take them off whenever you are not using them, keeping them on overnight especially if the parking area still has ice/snow in the morning is fine.

Why is Whakapapa closed?

Ruapehu's twinned resorts Tūroa and Whakapapa on New Zealand's North Island, is facing liquidation after the Government reportedly declined to provide a lifeline to keep it going until the 2023 ski season.

Lava flows that have been erupted from Ruapehu since the last glacial maximum are called the Whakapapa Formation. These flows all erupted between 15,000 and 2,000 years ago from a number of different craters on the summit of Ruapehu as well as from craters on the northern and southern flanks of the mountain.

It has been 15 years since the last eruption at Mt Ruapehu, on 25 September 2007. Today we look back at this small gas driven eruption at one of New Zealand's favourite volcanoes.

Turoa Skiing for the Beginner

There are two easy-to-ride lifts in this area, a magic carpet and a platter lift, and it's a dedicated learning area free of hoons and experts showing off. Beginners also love this area because it's very sunny (but it's hard for the resort to make and keep snow).

We found that Snow Valley is a great place to learn because it has a wide, long trail for first-timers. The resort boasts it has Southern California's best beginner terrain, which includes the legendary Thunder Mountain - often a favorite place to film for popular ski and snowboarding filmmaker, Warren Miller.

There is a very good offering for beginners at Les 3 Vallées with easy valley runs to almost all villages. There are also special beginner slopes for slower skiers and especially large beginner areas in Les Menuires, Courchevel 1540 & 1850 and Val Thorens.

Deer Valley is a favorite among many beginners because the resort is particularly attentive when it comes to both grooming and guest services. (For instance, they'll “valet” your skis overnight at the base of the hill so you don't have to carry them all the way to and from your hotel room.)

What is the closest town to Whakapapa?

The nearest towns are Taumarunui, National Park Village, Ohakune and Tūrangi. The small village of Whakapapa is located within the park.

Horseshoe Valley is a little tamer but still provides restaurants, a spa and a variety of fun options for the kids. Snow Valley and Mount St Louis offer you the play option with no stay however, both have great skiing with tubing options as well as chalets where you can eat and grab a warm beverage.

The best clothing choice is to dress in layers- it's easier to remove layers than not have the appropriate clothing. Waterproof clothing is highly recommended, especially for snowboarders. Also, for snowboarders, it's a good idea to wear a pair of wrist guards. Waterproof gloves are a necessity as well.

If you just want to go skiing or snowboarding and aren't too picky about riding a "fantastic mountain", Snow Valley is a great bargain and perfectly suitable to do the job.

Orelle - Val Thorens: The highest of the resorts, Val Thorens sits at the top of the Belleville valley. Its lifts & snow quality are the 3 Vallees best.

Les 3 Vallees, France: The titanic 3 Vallees is the world's biggest ski area with 600 kilometers of runs spread between the three main resorts of Courchevel, Meribel and Val Thorens.

At 12km long, this is the longest piste in Les 3 Vallées, the world's largest ski area. It connects the resorts of Courchevel and Meribel, offering breathtaking views of the French Alps.

Skiers can hop on the Jordanelle Express Gondola and easily access Little Baldy Peak and its ski runs, as well as the rest of the resort's runs.

Is Park City or Canyons better for beginners?

Just like you can't really ski in or out of the Hyatt Centric Park City unless you are at least an intermediate skier, truth be told, you really can't ski on much of the Canyons side of the mountain at all if you prefer greens and easy blues.
